Does Your Basement Leak When it Rains?
Rain is great for plants, but it’s not so great for basements and foundations. If your basement leaks when it is raining, then your home suffers from basement water intrusion. Don’t worry as you are not alone. Hundreds of thousands of houses and buildings all across the US suffer from the unwanted intrusion of water in their basement when it rains.
The question you might need to ask though is how does rainwater get into a basement?
Rain is the Leading Cause of Water Intrusion and Basement Leaks
Water is typically ‘forced’ into your basement in one of two ways. The first is via hydrostatic pressure, and the second is via lateral pressure.
Hydrostatic pressure is caused by the sheer weight of water. Rain lands on the ground and then soaks in, being drawn down. As groundwater builds up, it creates pressure in the soil. This pressure is enough for the water to be forced through tiny cracks in your walls, and into your basement.
Lateral pressure is caused by expanding soil. The earth around your foundation tends to be less dense than in areas further away from your home. Rainwater finds its way into the looser soil and causes the soil to expand. This creates further pressure on your walls and foundation, and cracks may appear.
How to Solve Basement Leakage Problems
First and foremost, you should make sure that your gutters are clean and debris-free. Gutters and downspouts are designed to keep water away from your foundation. If they are blocked, the water will gather around the foundation of your home.
You can also improve your grading by making sure that the soil surrounding your home slopes slightly downwards. This will ‘encourage’ rainwater to drain away from your house, and not towards it.
If water intrusion is a constant issue for you, then you could install an interior drainage system. Such a system will capture water as it enters the wall and drain it away before it reaches your basement floor. A sump pump will then remove the water altogether.
